Wrappings & Letters was founded in London in 2009. The idea originated from childhood aspirations and was shaped over many country Australian summers. The desire to surprise and delight with a personal touch giving that extra something that only one person can give to another.
Significant influence from a number of remarkable people has been truly instrumental in shaping Wrappings & Letters. Individuals who have offered insights, lessons and endless encouragement that have been integrated into many aspects of what Wrappings & Letters is and will continue in its growth to become.
The handwritten word is a delightful, fresh and creative form of expression used to communicate thoughts, ideas and even dreams. Attention to detail was the insight offered by Vera R. Howell. Vera encouraged thinking about the receiver of the message and the experience the words will create for them. Vera was also known to insist that a young writer re-write their letter to ensure this important insight was fully appreciated; “if something was worth doing then it was worth doing well” was the regularly shared sentiment. It is only now that some of Vera’s enlightening and rich lessons are beginning to be fully appreciated and put into practice.
The art of giving and the significant influence originated from Nancy J. Weston. Nancy encouraged all around her that giving was more than the just the gift, it is everything about the complete gift – the colour of the paper; the words on the card, the anticipation before the moment of giving and the thought and intended use of the gift.
Some memorable giving moments collected from the Wrappings & Letters team include:
Wrapped Strawberries: A delicious handpicked punnet of Australian summer grown strawberries delicately wrapped in a pink mulberry wrapping paper and finished with a white satin ribbon bow. The gift was accompanied by a handwritten note that simply said “sorry I missed our lunch”
Turning Eight: The memorable anticipation of turning eight and receiving a watch for the first time. There would be many hours spent learning to tell the time in preparation for turning eight and receiving a watch. It was all part of a sense of achievement and a significant milestone in growing up.
Gift Wrapped Baked Beans: A grandly wrapped tin of baked beans in an oversized gift box (more suitable for the weekly groceries) with a scribbled note “Let’s eat”. The baked beans were given to celebrate a year living together because it symbolised that the housemates couldn’t cook. However, there was always a tin of baked beans in the cupboard. Needless to say the gift giver or receiver really knew how to cook.
A Day of Treats: A menu of treats that combined the most amazing twenty-first birthday present, it was an experience! A menu setting out the day’s activities was presented in advance which translated into something that was symbolic for both the gift giver and receiver including: daily juice – fresh morning juice; the cowshed – pampering; swinging sixties – an exhibition at the Victorian and Albert museum; afternoon tea at Claridges; dressing up – clothes shopping; flying high – the West End production of Mary Poppins; evening cocktails – apple cinnamon cocktails; and, carriages – was time to head home.
It has taken a little while to bring to life what is now Wrappings & Letters. Wrappings & Letters aims to inspire, encourage and above all is an invitation to explore the handwritten word and the art of giving in your own unique way.
Wrappings & Letters the art of inspiration!
